The British International School of Charlotte (BISC) occupies a unique place in the educational landscape of private schools in the south Charlotte area. Formerly known as the British American School, it opened its doors on Endhaven Lane in Ballantyne 16 years ago in August 2004. BISC humbly began its mission, offering an education for students from grades pre-K to fifth grade with a total of four classrooms, 13 students and an academic team of four amazing teachers.

Jude Penson, one of the original teaching staff members and now the assistant principal and head of the Early Years Program, is still in touch with some of the first families to join the school. “I like that we develop long-lasting relationships with our families and how dynamic our school is,” Penson says. “You must change with the world. So, we are always looking for what’s next in order to prepare our students for the future.”

In 2013, BISC held fast to that philosophy by joining Nord Anglia Education (NAE), a family of 66 premium and contemporary international schools across 29 countries. With this partnership, the school continues to meet the community’s demands for a truly authentic international education and a more personalized approach to learning. Nord Anglia Education offers BISC students invaluable opportunities to work on international projects through collaborations with Juilliard, MIT and UNICEF.

Students also collaborate with peers through Global Campus, an innovative online platform connecting students to fellow learners from around the world through exclusive learning experiences and activities. As principal Adam Stevens notes, “Being part of such a forward-thinking international organization enables our school to choose from the topmost qualified, internationally and British-trained teachers in their fields, setting BISC apart from other schools.”

BISC’s “Be Ambitious” philosophy is at the core of the school’s foundation. It empowers individuals to have the confidence to invent the future; to think ambitiously, independently and innovatively; and to take advantage of emerging career paths — or forge their own. Staying true to its “Be Ambitious” philosophy, BISC became certified as an IB World School in 2017, offering the highly sought after International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) to juniors and seniors.

The IBDP is a rigorous, well-rounded educational program that is world-renowned and highly respected by colleges in the U.S. and across the globe. Fusing together the English National Curriculum with the International Early Years, Primary and Middle Years Curricula, BISC students begin preparing for the rigor of the IBDP as young as age two.

Students can participate in many after-school enrichment clubs as well as compete in a variety of sports, including the newly formed rugby sevens team, forged in partnership with the Charlotte Junior Rugby Association, and the tennis team with Charlotte City Tennis. Students will soon have many other sporting selections to choose from, such as cross-country and basketball, which are close on the horizon.
